After record participation in 2025, Unitil and other NHSaves utility partners are gearing up for the start of this year’s series of “turn-in” events, which allow customers to receive a $50 rebate per unit for recycling room air conditioners and dehumidifiers.
The weekly events will be held at locations throughout New Hampshire, beginning on May 30 and running through Oct. 24.
This is an opportunity for customers to recycle their outdated or inefficient air conditioners and dehumidifiers and earn a $50 per unit incentive, which has increased from $30 in past years. Through the program, eligible participants will receive a check in the mail after participation. While they could put the money toward a new more energy efficient unit, there are no requirements attached to the incentive and they may be used any way they like.
Participants are limited to two room air conditioners and two dehumidifiers per residential account serviced by the NHSaves utility partners, which include Unitil, Eversource, Liberty Utilities, and New Hampshire Electric Cooperative. The units can be dropped off at any turn-in event and must be in working order.
NHSaves is a collaboration of New Hampshire’s electric and natural gas utilities working together to provide customers with information, incentives, and support designed to save energy, reduce costs, and protect the environment statewide.
A record number of air conditioners and dehumidifiers were turned in last year with a total of 5,380 units being dropped off through the 18 events across all utility territories. Of those, 1,719 were dropped off at events held in Unitil’s service territory.
“We’re pleased that so many customers participated in this opportunity to recycle these units and take advantage of this unique program,” Unitil External Affairs Manager Amanda Vicinanzo said. “Last year’s turn-in event was so successful that a second was added in Concord to meet the demand. The additional Concord event will be held this year as well to give customers in the area another opportunity to participate locally. The response from customers from all utility partners has been extremely encouraging and we look forward to continuing to build on last year’s success.”

Additionally, if customers have a working refrigerator or freezer, at-home pickup for those large appliances are also available through NHSaves with an enhanced incentive of $150 per unit, which is an increase from the $75 offered last year. Customers who may be scheduling an at-home refrigerator or freezer pickup can add on a room air conditioner or dehumidifier for pickup as well and still receive the $50 incentive provided through the turn-in events.
The NHSaves utility partners are offering several other enhanced rebates on a variety of other appliances, including heat pump clothes dryers, clothes washers, air purifiers and heat pump water heaters.
